Three months after graduating high school, Brett realized a childhood dream by entering into a career illustrating comic books. He got his start in September 1979 assisting comic book inker Bob Layton as a background artist on Bob’s definitive first run on Iron Man, with writer David Michelinie and penciler John Romita Jr., for Marvel Comics.
Brett feels fortunate to have collaborated throughout his career with some of the best artists and writers in the comic book industry, such as George Perez, Ron Frenz, Kerry Gammill, Jerry Ordway, David Michelinie, Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern and Louise Simonson to mention just a few. He has worked on many popular titles for both Marvel and DC Comics. His work on the Superman titles, notably the “Death of Superman” storyline, is among his most recognized, along with the Spider-Man titles, The Mighty Thor, The Avengers and West Coast Avengers. Brett has enjoyed a versatile career, working primarily as a finish inker, but on occasion provided pencil art, traditional and computer coloring, story development and plotting. In the early 1990s he helped to pioneer digital coloring at DC Comics.
Twenty years into his comics career, Brett broadened his professional horizons by embarking on a second career as a wildlife and nature photographer. Spending the better part of the early 2000s traveling the United States, Brett captured images of a wide variety of wildlife and landscapes. He also spent time photographing local wildlife and examples of regional folk history, some of which has been exhibited by the Smithsonian Institute.
His photographs have been published in local, state and national magazines. This eventually led him to writing numerous articles to accompany his wildlife and nature images for publication in Outdoor Delaware, a magazine published by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
In 2005, Brett returned to DC Comics, this time working for DC Comics’ Licensing Department. Then, in 2010, when DC Licensing was closed down, he moved to Warner Brothers Consumer Products where he continues to produce DC related licensing artwork. In 2012 he expanded his skills to include creating children’s books and digital interactive iPad apps featuring Superman and Batman for Warner Brothers Global Publishing.
Currently, Brett is working on various comic book related projects, while also venturing into yet another new career path, this time as a voice-over actor. He continues to look for new and exciting ways to express his creatively.
